Virgin Media is a company seemingly obsessed with speed.

Not content with rolling out fibre optic broadband networks offering speeds of up to 50Mbps, the company has now signed none other than current Formula One championship leader for its latest display all things fast.

Across the next few days at Bluewater retail centre, the company is holding its SpeedWeek50 event, where shoppers will be given the chance to trial the latest speedy gadgets and gizmos – including a new super-fast Scalextric track and the Colin McRae: DiRT 2.

All of this is on offer next to a trial of the company's digital TV services and high-speed 50Mbps fibre optic broadband, which people can access via a range of Hewlett Packard's Touchsmart PCs.

However, if that was not enough, Jenson Button – who is currently top of the Formula One rankings with 85 points - will be on hand on October 20th to not only answer questions on his career, but also showcase his skills in a super-charged Mercedes SL AMG on a specially designed circuit around the centre.

The driver said he was "really looking forward" to the event.

He added: "It's always great to have the chance to meet some of our fans away from the race track and I'm sure they will have a fantastic time with all the activities that have been planned."
