Orange and 3 declare war over broadband advertisingWednesday, November 11th 2009 Orange and 3 have become the latest broadband providers to come to blows over advertising claims. For a while now it has seemed that the likes of BT, Virgin Media and Sky have a monopoly on arguments over advertising claims, what with their recent quarrels over marketing.
However, another two broadband providers have now decided to square up to each other in relation to the issue.
This time it is 3 and Orange, with the former choosing to complain to the Advertising Standards Authority over the latter's suggestion that it owns the UK's biggest mobile broadband network.
According to the Times, 3 believes it has the largest and has stated the claims in Orange's promotions could potentially mislead customers.
A 3 spokesperson said: "We're confident that we have the biggest 3G network in the UK — both in terms of geographic and population coverage — built on a 9,192-site network that grows by about 150 sites each week."
In contrast, an Orange source said it has based its own estimates on 3's own figures, which suggest its rival only has 91 per cent coverage.
The insider added to the newspaper: "It's not how many masts you have; it's where you stick them."
