Sky prepares to bring 3D TV to the massesWednesday, March 10th 2010 Will Sky's 3D TV demonstrations in shopping centres have the pulling power to up the firm's subscriber numbers? Despite originally being announced last year, we are all still waiting patiently for the full launch of Sky's hugely anticipated 3D digital TV service. The company's 3D broadcast of the Premier League clash between Manchester United and Arsenal in nine pubs across the UK earlier this year got mixed reviews, so the firm is now pushing ahead with plans to get hype surrounding it back up to maximum levels. Public demonstrations of the service are to be held at over 100 shopping centres across the UK within the next 12 months, starting with London's Westfield site from March 12th. The previews will showcase footage from the Premier League broadcast, as well as other sports coverage, live music, movies and coverage from the recent London Fashion Week. Sky is hopeful the move will not only raise the profile of the upcoming service, but also boost its subscribers. After all, where better to promote 3D TV subscription than in centres where people go specifically to buy things? Europe's first dedicated 3D channel is expected to launch next month, when it will initially be available in hundreds of pubs. Consumers will be able to enjoy it in their own homes later this year, when 3D-ready TVs become more widely available. Will you be first in the queue for the new service? Do you think the demonstrations will give Sky the boost it is seeking? Let us know below. |
