Has Virgin Media made HD digital TV more affordable?Wednesday, March 17th 2010 Virgin Media has claimed its new digital TV set-top box has made high definition programming more affordable. The battle for high definition (HD) digital TV dominance is well and truly underway. With both Virgin Media and Sky working hard to outdo each other in terms of broadcasting packages, subscribers are being increasingly caught up in a fight for their custom. Sky may have passed the 40-channel mark with its own HD offering, as well as announcing plans to hit 50 by Christmas, but Virgin Media isn't giving up just yet. The company recently announced it is set to launch a new V HD set-top box on March 22nd. Available for £49 plus installation to new and existing customers, Virgin Media has claimed the system has made HD more affordable by doing away with additional monthly subscription fees. TV viewers with an eco-friendly side will also be pleased to hear that the device, which differs from the basic V Box and V+HD Box, includes a power saving function that cuts its power usage. Cindy Rose, executive director of digital entertainment at Virgin Media, said: "We want to make the best High Definition TV available to more people at affordable prices and without the additional monthly subscription fee."
