New 3D-ready TVs have hit the high street, but will many consumers actually get the chance to enjoy such services?
3D digital TV becomes a reality - with a hefty price tag
From the success of Avatar and Alice in Wonderland in cinemas to Sky's launch of special digital TV services in pubs a the start of this month, 2010 has undoubtedly been the year of 3D. However, while the format has been a hit in public places, can it really make the big leap into everyone's homes?

Well, the first big test of this has come with the launch of Samsung's UE40 C700 3D-ready TV, which is now available in some John Lewis stores across the UK. As well as being compatible with Sky's new 3D service, the set also adds depth to the picture of standard broadcasts.

Sounds exciting, but how much will it cost for consumers? Well, that's a potential problem, as people need access to £1,800 to get the UE40 C700 into their homes.

Dan Simmons, a consultant for Screen Digest, told the Independent that this will count many people out of 3D TV.

He explained: "If you are a person who would buy a high-end TV then definitely a 3D TV would be a good option, but if you are someone who spends a few hundred pounds on a TV then you are probably going to have to wait a couple of years until prices come down."

Are you keen to jump straight on the 3D bandwagon regardless of cost? Or have you been well and truly priced out of the format?
