Virgin Media primed to take broadband to the next levelDo Virgin Media's plans to launch 400Mbps broadband put the company well ahead of its rivals? Many people would not argue against the fact that when it comes to broadband speeds in the UK, Virgin Media is already setting the pace.
Few rivals have been able to keep up with the fibre optic broadband provider's offerings, including 50Mbps services, in recent times. Because of this, they are likely to be less than impressed with the company's plans to push UK broadband further than ever before.
It has already been reported that 100Mbps broadband could be launched by the firm before the end of this year, while trials on 200Mbps are also continuing. However, the organisation's latest announcement of plans to potentially introduce 400Mbps is almost breathtaking.
Jon James, executive director of broadband for Virgin Media, told TechRadar.com that such speeds will be possible through a new modem that is currently in development.
He added to the website: "The DOCSIS 3 network really gives us a dial we can turn to give more speed to customers if we think that is the right thing to do both for those customers and commercially."
So, where does this leave the rest of the market? Can Sky, TalkTalk or BT really compete on any level with such speeds? Do such plans put Virgin Media well and truly out on their own? Let us know what you think below. |
You can sign up for fibre optic broadband from BT for just £19.99 per month. If you're one of the many Brits who would be fine with an up to 8Mb/s broadband connection, then O2 has the deal for you.
