Business Broadband Explained

Nearly every Internet Service Provider who offers home broadband products will also have a special set of business broadband packages that on the surface may not seem all that different, but to the trained eye will be specifically tailored to the needs of businesses, from the small home worker right up to the medium sized office, and will probably warrant the attention of anyone who is in the market for broadband for their place of business.

Business Broadband Packages - Usage and Speed

There are a huge variety of packages out there, but there are a few things that most will have in common and that you should probably look for when deciding on a business broadband package. The first should be the monthly usage. In this day and age, with the internet becoming more and more advanced and offering more functionality at the cost of higher amounts of bandwidth usage and data transference, you are going to ideally want a package that has little or no restriction on the monthly usage of your broadband connection. It is usually only the cheapest, most basic business packages that will restrict your usage in Gigabytes each month, but it is worth bearing in mind that most policies which advertised themselves as 'unlimited' will be paradoxically limited by a fair use policy.

This policy will usually limit the amount of data that you can access with your broadband connection during the peak hours of the day, usually delineated as between 6pm and 11pm. This is outside the business hours of many companies and should not be a problem, but if you don't feel that you can live with these restrictions then there are some packages that will allow truly unlimited use of your business broadband connection, though you will have to shop around and look hard to find them, and ultimately will need to pay slightly more for the privilege. The second thing you'll want to check up on is the speed that is available to you in your place of business.

If you're going to be using a BT landline to receive your broadband then the speed that is available will not necessarily meet the advertised maximum. Between 16Mbps and 24Mbps are the maximum speeds that can be gleaned from a BT landline, but you'll have to be in an area which is capable of this, and these areas are limited. However, most ISP website will allow you to enter your existing telephone number or postcode and will tell you the actual speed that you are likely to receive.

Business Broadband Static IPs and Webspace

Most business broadband accounts will come with a Static IP. This will allow you to run a server from your place of work and access your files when you're elsewhere, and so is a desirable addition. You'll also want to make sure that the deal come with adequate web space for creating your own website for the business, an you might also want email accounts to give to your staff so that they've a professional looking email address with the business name included.

Business Broadband Extras

Some companies will attempt to entice you with extras on top of your broadband. For example, BT are currently offering free mobile broadband as part of their most expensive broadband package aimed at small offices and businesses. This is great if you're going to be travelling and still need access to a broadband connection, but if it's really something you don't need then make sure you're not paying for it anyway.
