Cable Home Phone Explained

If you're not happy with your existing land line home phone service and want a better value deal then you might consider switching to a cable home phone service. Currently Virgin Media offers the largest cable service in the UK and their phone packages are some of the most flexible you will find anywhere. Cable home phone services require that you live within the range of a cable network, and because cable runs underground rather than through overhead wires you'll need a new line installed in your house, and since it will run underground it is relatively discrete but you may need to pay initial installation charges.

Once your cable phone line is set up you can use it just like you would your old BT line and plug your phone straight into it and start making calls. You will have to take a Virgin phone line which is has a line rental charge of £11 a month, which is comparable to the line rental you would pay on a BT phone line, and some phone packages are only available as part of a bundle that includes digital TV, but as we'll explain this is not a down side.

Cable home phone services are all supplied via the same single wire, and because of the versatility of the technology you can also receive broadband and digital TV via the same cable, and upgrading from just a phone package can be done as and when you are ready, but will of course result in an increased monthly charge, and possibly a change in the minimum length of your contract.

Cable Home Phone Deals

The cheapest home phone deal comes as part of the cable TV bundle known as M. This is a bundle that has no monthly charge and simply requires that you pay the £11 a month line rental. For this you will receive a phone line that gives you free calls during the weekend to any UK landline, as well as 45 digital TV channels at no extra cost.

If you're willing to pay a bit more and want a more inclusive phone package then for a small monthly charge you can have the L package, which again is bundled with the free digital TV package, but includes all evening and weekend calls within the UK to landline numbers in the monthly price.

The XL phone package goes one step further and offers unlimited anytime calls to UK landlines, meaning that you will have no restriction on the length or number of calls you make. There are restrictions on this service that limit the types of number that can be called, but for most customers' purposes this will not be an issue.

Talk Anywhere Packages

The second variety of cable home phone available is the Talk Anywhere packages which operate much like a mobile phone contract. Each month you pay for a limited number of free minutes; 200, 400 or 800. With these minutes you can then make a call any time of day or night to any land line or mobile phone in the world, and for every minute you spend on the phone one minute will be deducted from your total. This is great for people with relative abroad or for those who make a lot of calls to mobiles that wouldn't be covered by the standard cable home phone tariffs.
