Digital TV Explained

Everyone is going to have to get used to the idea of digital TV because by 2012 all analogue TV broadcasts in the UK are going to be terminated and everything is going to be digital, and in fact the digital switch over has already begun in some areas and it's spreading fast. There are three main ways in which you can receive digital TV, and the great news is that in most circumstances you won't need to change much of your existing TV equipment to prepare yourself.

Digital Capabilities

The reason that digital TV is superior to analogue broadcasts is simply that you can have loads more channels available, but the big news is interactive features. Not only can you have access to a seven day program guide direct on your remote, you can also get involved with programs, whether its finding out additional information about products and services or choosing different angles when you're watching football, it's all accessible via the red button on your controller.

Freeview

Freeview digital TV services have been around since 2002, but now is really the time to get on board. Freeview is the name for the free-to-air digital terrestrial TV service that is available using your existing aerial, and won't require a monthly subscription.

All you need to view Freeview services, which includes over 40 digital TV channels and tons more digital radio stations, is to get either a set top box which will decode the Freeview digital signal, or alternatively purchase a TV with a built in Freeview tuner. In the future Freeview will be able to produce HD quality broadcasts, but that's not going to be available until the end of the year and you'll need a new set top box and an HD ready TV.

Freesat

Freesat is the satellite version of Freeview, giving you even more program choice. You'll need to have a compatible satellite dish or purchase one to get the service, and you'll also need a Freesat set top box or a TV with Freesat built in. However, Freesat is already available with HD channels, but you'll need a Freesat HD box which will cost you a bit more than the standard one, and HD broadcasts are still relatively limited.

Subscription-Based Digital Services

There are two main subscription based TV services, and the largest is operate by Sky and uses satellite technology. Sky Digital TV has been around for a few years now and offers hundreds of channels showing the latest movies, big sports games and documentaries galore.

You will have to pay for different packages containing different channels, but there is such a wide variety and you only pay for what you will actually watch, so you can get a good deal. The second subscription TV service is offered by Virgin Media, and is only available in cabled areas, but offers much of the same functionality as Sky.

The most notable Virgin Media digital service is their on demand video service and movie bank, which allows you to watch TV shows and movies on demand whenever you want, and you can start and stop as your please, which is great if you've missed your favourite show and want to catch up, or just if there's nothing on TV that you fancy.
