Pay Monthly Mobile Broadband Explained

Mobile broadband refers to technology that enables computer users to access high speed internet services without physically connecting to a land line. It does not usually refer to internet or internet style services offered on mobile phones, although these use similar technology to deliver data. The main benefit of mobile broadband is the same as that of a mobile phone - it can be used anywhere that has a mobile signal.

That currently covers 95% of the UK population, although there is a long term aim to have 100% of the population within reach of 2Mbps or above internet connection, and mobile broadband is seen as a key way of achieving this in rural areas, as infrastructure costs can be lower than laying physical lines and hardware.

Although the most dense coverage of the highest available speeds is likely to be in urban areas, mobile broadband is expected to become a viable alternative to a land line for a variety of users. Other benefits include the opportunity with some suppliers to connect the service to a router and share access within a building (making it a replacement for standard internet), and the packages available for longer term subscription, including free wireless laptop computers.

The differences between pay monthly mobile broadband largely come from the maximum monthly download allowance. This is because download speed is generally fixed for each supplier (although Vodafone, who offer the highest maximum speeds of all the providers, do require customers to purchase a 'pro' USB modem to access their very highest speeds).

Instead, download speed is affected by signal strength and provision in the area - which works in a very similar way to having a good or bad mobile phone signal: in some locations, a signal may be stronger or weaker according to room, in others there will usually be a very good signal, although weather conditions, and the number of people using the network at the same time are also factors.

Pay Monthly Benefits

Choosing a longer term contract will usually get you more download allowance for the same price. Doing this might actually work out cheaper than taking a short contract with lower usage if you expect to use the internet regularly, as additional usage outside your allowance can be expensive.

Choosing the cheapest package with some providers would mean that you miss out on one of the benefits of a pay monthly contract over a pay as you go deal - a free USB modem. These are usually at least £30 if charged for, and choosing a slightly more expensive monthly rate that has a free modem can work out paying for itself (e.g. paying an extra £5 a month for a 24 month contract, instead of an 18 month one).

If you're looking at pay monthly mobile broadband, it can be a good idea to think more generally about your computing needs. If you're about to buy a new computer to go with the mobile broadband, or if you're expecting to in the next twelve months, it is worth considering 'free computer' deals, which can be a cheap way of getting a new computer that you are confident is compatible, whilst allowing you to avoid paying out the price of a computer all at once.
