Buyers guide to Sky deals for existing customers
Already a Sky customer but interested in adding to or upgrading your current subscription? Our impartial guide will help you to understand everything you need to know before you do.
We’ll cover the different Sky deals for existing customers, the equipment you'll need, what will happen to your bill and how long you’ll be tied into your new contract.
Why upgrade your Sky package?
Adding new services such as broadband and inclusive calls from your current supplier is more convenient than buying from someone else - there’s no need to sort out a new direct debit or change your billing arrangements, as everything will be added to your existing account. Plus, you’ll only ever have one company to deal with if you want to make further changes - or if anything goes wrong.
Upgrading your equipment is often free, although you’ll need to sign up for another 12 months, while some extras such as premium channels like Sky Sports and Sky Movies only require a commitment of 31 days, so if you decide you want to remove them after a month you can do so with one simple phonecall.
What are my options?
There’s a broad range of different Sky upgrade options. Many are available across the whole country, but some are only available in specific areas – that’s why we recommend using our postcode checker above to find out exactly what you can get before you go any further.
If you live in an area with full availability you can choose to add any of the following:
- Entertainment Extra – increases the number of entertainment channels to 80
- Sky TV Extra+ – includes the same extra standard definition channels as Entertainment Extra plus 50 subscription HD channels & 3D TV
- Sky Sports and Sky Movies – available on contracts from just 31 days
- Sky Broadband Unlimited – totally unlimited broadband over your phone line
- Sky Fibre Unlimited – totally unlimited fibre broadband (now available to more than homes
- Multi-room – a second Sky box in another room
Do I need any new equipment?
If you’re simply adding new channels to a TV package then it’s unlikely you’ll need any new equipment at all. If you’ve been with Sky since before the days of HD and you upgrade to High Definition for the first time you’ll be supplied with a free Sky+ HD box, but only if you haven’t already had one.
If you’re planning to add broadband to your existing Sky Entertainment package then you’ll need a Sky Hub router and a landline. Sky will provide the router free-of charge in exchange for £2.18 P&P and if you have no landline, or an old deactivated line Sky can arrange to have you connected for a small fee.
Six essential questions before you upgrade
- Do I want to upgrade my entertainment package with HD and/or 3D?
- Do I want to add premium channels such as Sky Movies or Sky Sports?
- Do I want to bundle my broadband, entertainment and phone services into one package?
- Am I in a Sky broadband or Sky Fibre Network area?
- Will I need any new equipment?
- How long will I be tied to my new upgrade? A full 12 months, or just 31 days?
Can I add HD channels?
Sky TV now comes with 11 basic HD channels as standard. By upgrading to Sky Entertainment Extra+, you can get 50 subscription HD channels including many of the UK’s top channels in High Definition.
To watch premium content such as Sky Movies or Sky Sports in HD you’ll need to add the relevant premium channels, upgrade to the Entertainment Extra+ package and add the premium HD upgrade pack at £5.25 a month.
It’s up to you to ensure that your television is HD ready before you sign up. If you upgrade to HD Sky will send you a free Sky+ HD box, but only if you haven’t been supplied with one previously and if you agree to a new 12 month contract.
Can I get 3D TV?
If you’ve got a 3D TV then you can access the basic 3D content simply by adding the Entertainment Extra+ channel pack. Sky Sports and Sky Movies customers can access some bonus 3D content by subscribing to one or both of those premium channel packs, Entertainment Extra+ and the premium HD upgrade pack.
Can I get broadband?
Most UK consumers can get Sky broadband in one form or another. In network areas you have the choice of the free, basic Sky Broadband Lite when you add Sky line rental, or Sky Broadband Unlimited, while any of the 16 million homes located in Openreach areas can get at least one of the Sky fibre broadband packages.
In other areas of the UK that fall outside the Sky network you may be able to get Sky Broadband Connect, which is a much more basic service that costs more than Sky Broadband Unlimited or Sky Fibre Unlimited. If you're interested in Sky broadband we recommend using our postcode checker to carefully examine your options.
All Sky broadband packages require line rental at £15.99 a month and a £2.18 router delivery charge.

What about upgrading my equipment and installation?
If you’re an existing Sky customer then there are no additional installation charges for most upgrades, but be aware that some packages have one-off connection fees. If you upgrade your Sky box you should have little problem installing it yourself, unless you upgrade to Multiroom, in which case you will require an engineer visit.
Contracts & minimum terms
Sky contracts are usually 12-month fixed contracts, and a new 12-month period will start from the point when you upgrade your hardware or add extra services such as broadband. You will have to pay a penalty fee if you want to exit your contract early, and you may be required to return or pay for any equipment supplied by Sky.
However, two of the most popular upgrades – Sky Sports and Sky Movies – can be terminated with just 31 day’s notice if you change you mind further down the line, so if you’re simply adding channels then it doesn’t tie you in to any additional contracts.
Billing and payment methods
All charges for upgrades will be added to your existing bill, and will be paid for using your pre-existing Direct Debit so you won’t need to worry about setting up a new payment method. In the case of adding extra channels such as Sky Sports you can cancel these after 31 days, and the charges will be deducted from all subsequent bills.
