Virgin Media Home Phone Explained

Virgin Media was created in 2006 and is now the largest supplier of cable services to UK households, with around 60% of households situated in areas covered by the Virgin Media cable network. Rather than using traditional overhead telephone wires constructed from copper, the Virgin Media cables are hidden underground and recently they have begun to roll out their latest fibre optic cabling for blazing fast broadband speeds as well as home phone and digital television all offered down a single cable.

Virgin Home Phone Installation

The most basic package that Virgin offer is of course home phone, and it's important to remember that a majority of their other services, like digital TV and cable broadband require that you also take a Virgin Media home phone package as a part of the deal.

In order to make sure that you're eligible for a Virgin Media home phone line, you will need to make use of their on site post code checker, or alternatively use our cable postcode checker above. Once you've established that you are within an area covered by the Virgin Media cable network, you will need to take into consideration the various costs attached to this service.

Firstly, if you're currently a BT customer you will of course no longer require the BT service, and your existing phone number will usually be transferable to your new Virgin home phone account. Once you've signed up for one of the various Virgin home phone packages, which we'll tackle in a moment, you'll need to have the Virgin cable line installed in your property if there is not currently one available, which is currently charged at a one off payment of £30. The basic monthly line rental for a Virgin home phone line is £11.99 if you pay by direct debit but more if you use other methods of payment.

Virgin Media Home Phone Packages

There are six types of home phone packages offered by Virgin and these can be split into two categories. The first three are basic talk plans, rated by size from M to XL. The M sized Talk Weekends is only available as part of a bundle that includes either broadband or digital TV services, but gives you free unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines. Talk Evenings and Weekends can be bought as a stand alone home phone package, as can Talk Unlimited, costing £3.45 and £7.95 respectively each month on top of the line rental, and offering incrementally more unlimited free calls to UK landlines.

The second trio of Virgin home phone packages works a lot more like mobile phone contract tariffs and are ideal for people who make calls to premium rate or international numbers on a regular basis. Each month with a Talk Anywhere package you have a set number of free minutes to use, either 200, 400 or 800. With these minutes you can call any number anywhere in the world and not incur any additional charges regardless of the time of day or the nature of the number you're calling. As a result there's a Virgin home phone package for everyone, and it's also easy to expand your price plan to include the other services offered by Virgin Media without breaking the bank or having to cause yourself hassle.
