Virgin Student Broadband
Virgin Media student broadband deals for June 2013
Virgin Media’s range of student broadband packages and bundles come on short 9 month contracts rather than the usual 18 months. This makes them ideal if you’re likely to be going back home for the summer or moving house.
There are lots of options to choose from, and you can see them all in the list above. On the Virgin Media site there’s a handy calculator with which to work out how the cost of each package will work out when split between everyone living in your house. You can find the calculator by clicking on the deal you want and then on the “Housemate Calculator” tab when you arrive at Virgin’s student broadband page.
Virgin Media student broadband without a phone line
Virgin Media student broadband is available without a phone line. To get fixed line broadband from any other provider you’d need to pay line rental at up to £15.45 a month on top of your monthly broadband subscription fee – but not with Virgin.
There are two broadband packages to choose from – up to 30Mbps, and up to 60Mbps.
The up to 30Mbps package should be fine if just two or three of you will be sharing the connection. However, for houses with 4 or more students it might be wise to invest in the faster up to 60Mbps service, especially if you’re all likely to be playing games online and using Spotify and Netflix at peak times.
Whichever package you choose you’ll get uncapped downloads and a Virgin Media Super Hub wireless router so you can all browse the web using your Wi-Fi laptops, netbooks or ipads. This router has been specifically designed to handle the high data transfer rates of fibre optic broadband, and it’s more than up to the task of supporting a houseful of students at the same time.
Student broadband bundles
There are plenty of options for bundling your Virgin student broadband with phone, TV or both. For example , you can add a cable TV package with over 100 TV channels and a selection of HD channels. All Virgin student broadband and TV packages come with a non-recording HD set-top box.
If you want a package with inclusive calls you’ll need to add a phone line, but don’t worry as line rental at £14.99 a month is included in the prices you’ll see on the Virgin Media student broadband site. As standard you’ll get inclusive weekend calls to UK landlines and Virgin mobiles
Contracts and payments
These Virgin Media student broadband deals come on 9 month contracts. Your services won’t automatically end once the 9 months are up, and the onus will be on you to contact Virgin Media 30 days before you want to discontinue your contract, or you will continue to be charged.
If you cancel your service before the initial 9 months has passed Virgin can charge you an early disconnection fee. You’ll be charged for each service and for each month that remains of the original 9 month minimum term, so the more services you have the more you’ll be charged.
The prices quoted refer to payment by Direct Debit only, and if you pay by any other method you'll be charged an extra £5 a month.
As standard you’ll be signed up for ebilling, i.e. your bills will be sent to you electronically. If you decide that you’d rather get a traditional bill through the post this will cost you an extra £1.75 a month.
Whether you’re taking one, two or all three services you’ll have to pay a one-off installation fee off £49.95.
Remember, if you're going to buy a bundle that includes cable TV you’ll also have to get a TV license. You have the option to pay for your license in one lump sum, or you can pay in monthly, quarterly or weekly instalments.
