What makes TiVo different?
What sets Virgin Media TiVo apart from the vast array of other digital TV recorders available to UK consumers is its wealth of new and exclusive features.
Incredibly TiVo will “learn” what your tastes are by looking at the programmes that you record and watch the most. It will then make recommendations and even automatic recordings to draw new shows to your attention.
When you go through your list of recordings you can give each one a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” via the remote so TiVo knows how its selections went down. If you quite like something you can give it a single thumbs up; if you loved it you can give it a triple thumbs up. This will make TiVo remember what you enjoyed the most and then record subsequent episodes of the series for you.
TiVo also has a “WishList” function that lets you enter the name of any actor or director (for example) that you love. Then, if a new show or movie appears in the listings that features one of them, your TiVo box will record it automatically so its ready and waiting for you whenever you're in the mood to watch something new.
Perhaps most remarkable TiVo will not only record forthcoming shows but also shows that you may have missed. Your TiVo EPG can be rewound up to seven days into the past so that you can “unmiss” programmes from the past week. No other set-top box currently on the market in the UK can do this.
TiVo can also be used for more than just watching and recording TV. The box comes with its own inbuilt 10Mb modem so that you can browse the web and download on-demand content without slowing down the broadband connection for everyone else in the house. You can even use it to download apps and games from the web to play on TiVo whenever you fancy a little mental stimulation.
And if you're away from home when you realise that a great TV show is starting, don’t worry. Thanks to the TiVo smartphone app (or via a good old-fashioned pc or laptop) you can remotely set your TiVo to record whatever you like, wherever you happen to be at the time.
Which TiVo box is right for me?
At the Virgin Media TiVo launch two boxes were unveiled. They both have more or less the same amazing functions and features with the only real difference being in the amount of TV and movies each can store.
With the TiVo 1TB box you can record up to 500 hours of normal TV or 100 hours of HDTV while with the 500GB box you can record up to 250 of standard definition TV or up to 50 hours of HD TV. Whichever box you go for you’ll be able to record up to three channels at a time, access on-demand content, watch catch-up TV and play games.
What about TiVo bundles?
