Virgin Media National Broadband Explained

Most people will know that Virgin Media own and operate the largest consumer cable network in the UK, offering digital TV, home phone and lightening fast fibre optic broadband at up to 50Mbps. What you may also know is that Virgin Media's cable services are only available in areas covered by their cable networks, which is inclusive of around 65% of UK households. What this means is that there are many people out there who want a Virgin Media broadband service but who live outside of their cable areas. However, if you have confidence in the Virgin brand and still want internet via Virgin Media then you have the option of using Virgin National Broadband.

What is Virgin National Broadband?

Virgin National Broadband is the ADSL broadband internet service offered by Virgin. ADSL broadband uses your existing copper land line telephone connection and can be used in unison with any telephone service you may already be receiving. Virgin National broadband isn't like every other ADSL service out there however, as we shall see.

Virgin Media National Broadband Benefits

Virgin National Broadband used to be available with download speeds of up to 8Mbps which is an attribute shared by most ADSL providers, but Virgin recently increased the speed of their service to allow up to 16Mbps download speeds. These higher speeds are not available in all areas so it's worth using a post code checker either on the Virgin site or on a price comparison site to see if your line would be eligible.

If you are currently a Virgin National Broadband customer then you can make the jump to this faster speed without any additional charge for the first 3 months. After three months of the faster trial you can either continue with the 16Mbps service at a cost of £8 a month on top of your current package or discontinue the speed increase and return to your old speed. New customers also have access to this great deal, but will also need to pay a one off £30 set up charge for the service.

As with most Virgin Media services you will be able to bundle Virgin National Broadband with a number of other services in order to reduce the overall cost of your monthly outgoings and consolidate your various services into one place. For example, adding a Virgin Home Phone package to your Virgin National Broadband deal can give you unlimited evening and weekend calls to UK landlines, which is great for chatting to friends and relatives around the country without breaking the bank.

Virgin Media National Broadband Extras

The other great thing about all Virgin National Broadband packages is that they include a free Wireless kit which bought separately would cost you £40. What this means is that you will be able to set up a wireless network in your own home, giving internet access to your laptops, games consoles and other Wi-Fi devices without the need for wires congesting the floor. Each Virgin National Broadband contract has a minimum term of 12 months after which time you are free to cancel, and the connection is great for heavy internet users as it has unlimited monthly download usage, provided you stick to the terms of the fair use policy.
