Glossary
Access Point
A Wireless (Wi-Fi) hub which allows wireless devices to connect to a wired Ethernet network.
Activation
Activation is the process by which your existing phone line becomes enabled to receive data and voice calls simultaneously. Activation takes place at your local phone exchange.
ADSL
ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) is a popular technology for providing broadband services. It works by sending two digital signals down your existing telephone line, one for voice and the other for data. The 'asymmetric' refers to the faster download (downstream) speeds compared to the upload (upstream) speeds. Most Service Providers put a lot more emphasis on the download speed than the upload speed as most home computers spend much more time downloading data from the Internet than uploading. Uploading data is usually restricted to sending information to web servers for information. For businesses and power users this upload speed may be very important so should never be forgotten.
Always on
A key feature of the broadband technology which means that users do not need to dial up to log on to the Internet. Broadband gives users instant Internet access 24 hours a day.
