London’s museum centre

With the West End on its doorstep and culture galore, Kensington has everything a true urbanite needs for city life. It is also home to some of the UK’s most important museums including the Science Museum, the Victoria & Albert and the Natural History Museum.

These iconic locations are dependent on modern technology to bring their exhibitions to life, and so the entire area is well served with standard broadband connectivity.

However, the Borough is currently at an impasse with BTOpenreach, which has withdrawn plans to deploy its superfast broadband (FTTC) system in 108 street cabinets - that's over 34,000 addresses.

The problem lies in the aesthetics of the ‘street boxes’ that house the essential workings for fibre optics, with Kensington Borough Council claiming that the design of the boxes is not in keeping with the historic status of the borough and its buildings. However, residents and businesses are continuing to push for superfast broadband to be delivered to homes and businesses across the borough.

The result is that, while Kensington, North Kensington and Holland Park benefit from fast broadband speeds and extensive coverage, there are surprising slow spots to the south between Kensington Road and Cromwell Road, and to the east towards St James Park. If a compromise between BT and the Council is reached then hopefully these slow spots will eventually be eradicated.
