Preserving aesthetics and improving function

Lisburn was only granted city status in 2002, but has embraced the opportunities with typical Irish vigour. Historically known as the birthplace of the Irish linen industry, the city has striven to maintain its heritage whilst making progress towards its future prosperity. Areas such as the Historic Quarter, although re-furbished, remain relatively unchanged. The city also offers some of the best shopping in Northern Ireland.

The Historic Quarter is at the centre of Lisburn’s plans. The City Council intends to raise the awareness of this unique feature, through branding and marketing. Its aim is to “create the right physical conditions to attract new investment, new business and new jobs.”

However, protecting the Quarter’s appearance, such as the cobbled streets, is still very much a priority. Lisburn hopes to give its visitors the best of both worlds, offering dynamic facilities against a historic backdrop. The proposed improvements to broadband in Lisburn should have a relatively minor impact on its aesthetics, but could prove crucial for the city’s overall regeneration.

There appear to be no official slow spots in Lisburn, with broadband connection speeds generally between 5Mbps to 10Mbps in the city centre. Various cable providers are working to improve their services, but there are some issues with connectivity in some areas including Dunmurry, Ballylesson and Flatfield.
