What’s hot and what’s not

Leeds has been categorised as a ‘Gamma world city’, making it one of the most forward-looking developmental areas in Europe. A gamma world city or ‘global city’ is one that is considered to be an important node in the economic infrastructure of a country.

In the case of Leeds, its position as the second largest financial centre outside of London puts it in the premiere league for developing cities. A quarter of the working population of Leeds are employed in the banking, finance and insurance sectors – industries that rely heavily on ultra-fast broadband connectivity and a communications infrastructure that can cope with the demands of a 24/7 global industry.

That means the areas around Leeds City Centre have luxuriously fast download speeds. However, one of the surprising slow areas is around the University of Leeds at Woodhouse, so students may need to find a Wi-Fi cafe in Burley, Leeds City Centre or Kirkstall to check their emails.

Residential areas such as Beckhill, Little London and Lovell Park have fair to average coverage, although some flats in the high-rise blocks in Lovell Park may have connectivity issues, depending on their distance from the exchange.

Parts of the city are also BT Infinity-enabled such as the areas covered by the Pudsey Exchange, although this hasn’t yet been rolled out across the entire city.

Hi,

I live in a relatively central part of Leeds (LS11 5WF), close to granary wharf and the city centre. I can't get fibre optic broadband in my area so the bit under the heading "Fibre optic broadband" on this page is a little confusing - http://www.cable.co.uk/local/broadband/west-yorkshire/leeds/.

Obviously i guess it must only be some parts of LS11 that can, but is there any way of getting some kind of map on the site to show which parts of Leeds actually can get fibre optic, or can you supply me with the same information another way? I'm only really interested in the city centre but i'm sure others would appreciate knowing how the cables lie further afield.

I used the postcode checker near the top of the same page on some other more central leeds postcodes (variants of LS1 to LS3 for businesses found on yell.com) and seemingly none of them can get fibre optic either. At this point i should say i do like this site and this isn't a complaint as such but the info provided here doesn't seem consistent and i'd appreciate some clarity.

Things like this are encouraging to see - http://www.cable.co.uk/news/budget-confirms-ten-cities-set-for-ultra-fast-broadband-cash-801323663/ - however 2015 is quite a long way off!

Best Regards

Jonathan
