Broadband providers urged to reveal all about speeds

Tuesday, March 2nd 2010 by Editorial
Bundle providers in the UK should reveal to consumers the exact connection speeds available to them, it has been claimed.
The UK's broadband providers have been urged to consider being more transparent over their connection speeds.

Internet service provider Karoo has launched a speed map highlighting the quality of connections available in its area of coverage and is now calling on rivals to do the same.

The company suggested that people can often be in the dark over their speeds, particularly due to the fact that most providers advertise using "up to" estimates.

Nick Thompson, director of consumer and publishing services at Karoo owner Kingston Communications, said one of the most frustrating issues is that sometimes services do not match up to such figures.

He added: "With last year's Digital Britain report calling for greater transparency, we are urging other providers to follow our lead."

Virgin Media recently announced plans to launch the UK's fastest commercial network, which would offer speeds of up to 100Mbps, by the end of 2010.

Of course that's easy when you're a fixed line monopoly with no commercial confidence issues accordingly ...
