BT Race to Infinity votes rally issued in Malvern
BT will use the results of the vote to ascertain the five UK communities with the highest demand for super-fast broadband and will roll out the technology in these locations by early 2012.
Consumers and firms have until New Year's Eve to register their interest via the Race to Infinity website, with the Malvern Gazette warning the Worcestershire town is currently off the pace.
According to the newspaper, around 1,200 votes have been cast for the community out of a possible 15,677 people, equivalent to 11.5 per cent.
Although it is not currently in the top five, Malvern could still convince BT to deploy fibre broadband in the area if 75 per cent of homes and businesses vote.
Stressing the importance of the technology, Barbara Williams of Malvern Hills District Council said: "Super-fast broadband would make a real difference to the way that businesses and residents use the internet and would also give our local economy a significant boost."
