
Telecommunications giant BT has become the first broadband provider to reach the five million customers mark.
Broadband provider BT has confirmed that five million people are now signed up to its internet services.The company, which also supplies home phone and digital TV services, has revealed that Elizabeth Patterson of East Kilbride has become its five millionth broadband subscriber.
According to BT, the total number of broadband users in the UK now stands at over 14 million, which is a massive rise on the figure of 135,000 recorded around seven years ago.
John Petter, managing director of BT's consumer division, said: "Broadband has the ability to transform people's lives and the fact that we are still showing strong take-up when there are more than 14 million ADSL broadband customers in the UK is testament to the unique benefits of being connected."
News of the landmark figure has come after BT confirmed plans to install an advanced communication network in the new MediaCityUK development which is under construction in Manchester.
