BT to offer free YouView set-top box from October 26th

BT will launch its YouView set-top box on October 26th 2012 and will support the introduction by offering the device free to new BT Infinity fibre optic broadband customers.
The deal represents a £299 saving on the full retail price of the box, which gives customers subscription-free access to more than 100 digital TV and radio channels, plus seven days of catch-up content from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5.
On-demand TV is available from BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4OD, Demand5, Milkshake and NowTV, with more content providers set to be added to the platform in the future.
Furthermore, customers who choose the YouView service from BT will be able to access the BT Vision library, which boasts a catalogue of more than 5,000 programmes, from sports to blockbuster movies.
Featuring a 500 GB hard drive, BT's YouView box is capable of storing up to 300 hours of standard-definition programming or about 125 hours of high-definition TV.
Households outside the BT Infinity area can still get a free YouView box by signing up for TV Essential.
Alex Green, director of TV at BT Retail, said: "The launch of YouView from BT is another piece of exciting news about BT's plans for TV."
