Digital TV subscription across Europe top 100m mark

Friday, March 13th 2009 by Editorial
There are over 100 million digital TV subscriptions across Europe, according to a new study.
A new report has found the amount of digital TV subscription across Western Europe surpassed the 100 million mark in 2008.

Research by Strategy Analytics estimates that over 17 million households across Western Europe became digital over the course of the year.

The report entitled Western Europe Digital Television Forecast claims that 150 million households will be watching digital TV in 2012.

It also estimated that 57 million homes will use digital terrestrial televisions (DTT) as their "primary viewing platform" by 2012.

John Lee, analyst in Strategy Analytics Multiplay Market Dynamics service, said DTT is "becoming competitive with lower-tier pay television offerings both in terms of channel selection and quality".

He added: "As European countries undergo their respective Digital Switchovers (DSO), and analogue signals are shut off, DTT will emerge as the dominant primary digital viewing platform."

Chris Johns, chief engineer for broadcast strategy for Sky, recently told a Digital Television Group conference that he hopes his organisation can offer 3D TV to consumers before the end of 2009.
