Equality 'key to UK's fibre optic broadband rollout'Consumer Focus has claimed the introduction of next generation broadband services across the UK should close the digital divide. Efforts to introduce high-speed broadband across the UK should focus on equality, according to Consumer Focus. The body's digital expert Jillian Pitt has stated that as the gap between "haves and have-nots" is widening, more needs to be done to ensure everyone has access to affordable fibre optic broadband services. She explained that as the market is only currently introducing such services in urban areas, intervention is necessary. "It is the areas being left behind that have the greatest need in terms of communication, access to services, and being able to compete commercially," she added. "The government must ensure broadband is available to everyone regardless of location and income." Ms Pitt's comments have come after the government confirmed that Broadband Delivery UK will be responsible for the introduction of high-speed web services across the country. The body will manage funding generated for the rollout of next generation internet services to 90 per cent of the UK by 2017.
