Gigaclear commences fibre broadband rollout in Rutland
The first homes in Hambleton will be connected at the start of October.

Gigaclear has issued a progress update on its fibre optic broadband rollout in the Rutland village of Hambleton.

The ultra-fast broadband network operator began deploying the infrastructure earlier this month and is set to connect the first customers in the community in early October 2011, with the work due to be completed by mid-October.

Hambleton is the first village that has been included in Gigaclear's rollout programme, which is aiming to deliver fibre to the home to residents and businesses across the UK.

Every customer who connects to the fibre broadband service will receive a 1,000Mbps-capable router, four gigabit Ethernet ports and a firewall that supports IPv4 and IPv6.

Initially, the network - through internet service provider Rutland Telecom - will offer subscribers download speeds of up to 50Mbps.

Matthew Hare, chief executive of Gigaclear, said: "This Hambleton build ... is the start of the Gigaclear plan. Our focus is national and targeted in areas where there is a high demand for secure, high-quality connections."

Last week, Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt announced that Rutland had become one of the first counties in the UK to win approval for its public sector-funded super-fast broadband rollout plans.
