The telecoms sector will now be governed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
An organisation representing broadband companies has expressed concern over the government's decision to switch responsibility for the telecoms industry to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).Speaking to PC Pro, a spokesperson from the Internet Service Providers' Association (ISPA) said it would have preferred broadband and related policy to have continued being handled by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
Explaining the potential difficulties that could be created by the move, the source pointed out the DCMS is also tasked with looking after the interests of the music industry.
"[This] is a key area surrounding internet policy at the moment, so it's not great to see more power handed to a department that is not associated with our industry," they remarked.
Prime minister David Cameron explained the DCMS's jurisdiction will now cover everything from the BT pension crown guarantee to legislation related to the internet, including the implementation of the Digital Economy Act.
