New figures highlight broadband growth

Nine out of ten households with internet access in the UK have broadband connections, official figures have revealed.
The majority of households with internet access in the UK now have broadband connections, according to new research.

Figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) have revealed that 90 per cent of homes with web access have such connections, which is a 21 per cent increase from 2006.

In addition, it was found that 70 per cent of households in the UK now have some form of internet access, which equates to 18.31 million.
This was an increase of 1.85 million since last year.

According to research recently published by Point Topic, 445,000 new broadband lines were installed across the UK during the first half of 2009.

The intelligence firm claimed that this means there are now 17.8 million in use overall, while the figure is expected to rise to 23 million by 2013.
