Ofcom considers new broadband-enhancing technology
New technology which can be used to improve broadband access in rural areas is the subject of a new discussion document published by Ofcom.

The communications regulator has announced that the wireless technology is designed to search for unoccupied radio waves – called white spaces – between TV channels to transmit internet signals.

It is believed that wireless signals transmitted through such frequencies tend to travel further, which could be key to improving mobile broadband services in the countryside.

However, Professor William Webb, head of research and development at Ofcom, warned that the technology is still "largely unproven".

He added: "The purpose of this discussion document is to further the thinking that is taking place around the world on geolocation and speed the development of possible solutions."

Last month, Ofcom set out its next steps to ensure the availability and take-up of communication services such as broadband, mobile phones and digital TV.
