Sky makes call over sports rightsWednesday, June 10th 2009 A leading digital TV provider has called for changes in how coverage of sport is split between broadcasters. The chief executive of Sky has claimed that there should be changes to how sports programming is shown on TV.
Jeremy Darroch told an industry event in London that UK sports bodies should be given a free choice on which broadcaster they would like to partner with, in order to meet the best interests of their field.
He added that the digital TV provider has suggested in its submission to a review on listed events reserved for free-to-air channels that certain sports should not have to be placed on the scheme without permission from a governing body.
Mr Darroch claimed that such a move means organisation's are restricted in their choice of partner.
"You undermine their ability to set the right balance across a complex set of factors, including income, exposure, depth of coverage and promotional support," he added.
The comments have come after it was revealed that digital TV provider Setanta's future hangs in the balance, as the company edges towards administration. |
TVs are still the favoured method of watching programmes, Broadband TV News has claimed. Telecoms giant BT has included Nathan Stephens on the cover of one of its south Wales Phone Books. Neil Berkett of Virgin Media has argued that "urgent" changes need to be made to the way broadband speeds are advertised. | Fibrecity contractors have cut a number of Virgin Media's connections in Bournemouth. Barnet's November clash with League Two rivals Torquay United will be broadcast by digital TV provider Sky. Suzi Williams of BT has described Paralympic athletes such as Oscar Pistorius as "incredible". |
