Teesdale 'set for fibre optic broadband by 2011'Tuesday, February 9th 2010 Fibre optic broadband services could be installed in the Teesdale area by 2011, according to reports. Residents and businesses in Teesdale could be given access to fibre optic broadband services by 2011, it has been suggested.
The Digital Dale project has been established in the area to find funding that will be used to develop a network offering connection speeds of up to 20Mbps, the Teesdale Mercury reports.
At present only 12.3 per cent of residents have a connection, so the service is likely to be beneficial to many in the region.
Deborah Jenkins, chairwoman of Barnard Castle Vision, which is leading the project, told the newspaper: "This project is hugely exciting and looks set to transform Teesdale's ability to compete on an equal basis with urban and city centre locations as places to live, work and visit."
News of the plans has come after a study by ABI Research found that 106 million people worldwide are expected to subscribe to fibre optic broadband services by the end of 2014.
