Virgin Media doubles broadband speeds in Mapperley

Virgin Media is rolling out faster broadband in part of Nottingham under its 'double speeds' upgrade programme.

Mapperley is the latest community to benefit from the project, which began in March and will see the cable company double the downstream rates available to more than four million households, reports the Nottingham Post.

The work will also see Virgin Media increase its top-tier broadband speed from 100Mbps to 120Mbps.

Once they receive the faster broadband speeds, subscribers will be able to take greater advantage of next-generation broadband services such as online TV streaming and internet telephony.

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media, said: "We have driven the development of faster broadband in the UK and we're delighted to be boosting our customers' speeds in Mapperley."

After the 'double speeds' programme has been completed, all Virgin Media customers will be able to enjoy super-fast broadband as standard and benefit from the "incredible digital entertainment services that exist now", he added.

The company has regularly boosted its broadband service, with its 10Mbps subscribers upgraded to receive speeds of 20Mbps in 2007. Subsequent speed increases were carried out in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
