Fibre optic broadband provider Virgin Media has issued a warning to the government over its plans to bring an end to online filesharing.
"Persuasion not coercion" is key to stopping people from illegally sharing music and video files online, according to a leading fibre optic broadband provider.A spokeswoman for Virgin Media has spoken out on the issue after the government revealed plans to potentially disconnect those who persistently download material through P2P sites.
While the source said the company backed the concept of tackling piracy, she explained that such punishments may serve to just "alienate mainstream consumers".
She added: "We are also concerned that, as they stand, the government's funding proposals would increase costs and penalise internet service providers (ISPs) who want to invest in making implementation efficient."
The Internet Service Providers Association also recently revealed concerns over the plans, claiming the amendments had been put forward without consulting the industry.
