Virgin Media wins digital TV patent caseMonday, November 30th 2009 Digital TV provider Virgin Media has won a legal dispute relating to the design of its electronic programme guide. Virgin Media is celebrating after winning a legal case over patent infringement on its digital TV service. The company, which also offers fibre optic broadband services, was accused by Gemstar of breaking three European patents over the look and technology used in the display of programme information. However, London's High Court has ruled in favour of Virgin Media over the issues, stating that two claims were too general. In addition, the final one was amended and not challenged by the digital TV provider. Virgin Media's general counsel Bryan Hall told Broadband TV News: "The decision is resounding confirmation that our position was correct and that Gemstar's patents are invalid. Gemstar should not have brought this case." Last week, the digital TV and broadband provider revealed plans to collaborate with TiVo on a new platform for its broadcast service. The first co-branded products to be created through the partnership will be launched next year.
