Whitchurch in Shropshire is to now benefit from Virgin Media's super-fast, fibre optic broadband.
Whitchurch to benefit from super-fast broadband
Internet provider Virgin Media has launched the UK's fastest broadband service in Whitchurch.

Homes in the local area will benefit from a fibre optic service which is nearly nine times faster than average speeds.

At 50Mb, it will allow customers to download their favourite music album in as little as 11 seconds, while a TV show could be downloaded in a mere minute, reports the Whitchurch Herald.

Jon James, executive director of broadband at Virgin Media told the newspaper that the service will "transform" people's online experiences.

"The new 50Mb service in Whitchurch will allow family members to experience ultrafast broadband at the same time – regardless of how many laptops or consoles they own, and to enjoy the ultimate online TV, music and film experience," he added.

On Monday (July 6th), rival broadband provider BT will begin the next phase of its own super-fast broadband rollout, providing homes in Muswell Hill, north London and Whitchurch, a suburb north of Cardiff, with fibre optic coverage.

There was so much publicity when this was announced at the beginning of July, both on the Internet and in the local press. Trouble is, a month and a half down the line and despite having entered about a hundred different Whitchurch (SY13 xxx) postcodes onto Virgin's web site, it always says there is no fibre service available in the area and offers only traditional broadband. I've made several phone calls to Virgin about this asking exactly where in Whitchurch (only a small market town) this service is actually available, only to be promised a call back that never materialises.

The phrase "Up to" is being used again, so we don't really know what we will get if we go for this option. It says Virgin are laying a Fibre optical line into Whitchurch, but doesn't say how it will get to the users. Will it be via the phone lines using ADSL or will they be laying a cable TV style network to deliver it direct to our homes?
