Wireless laws 'could hinder broadband access improvements'
A new UK report highlights that Wi-Fi laws could be restricting broadband take-up.
Laws in place to stop wireless networks being shared illegally could restrict broadband access, it has been claimed.

According to a study conducted at the University of East Anglia, entitled Law in the Last Mile: Sharing Internet Access Through WiFi, broadband uptake could be improved if people were given more freedom to share their connections.

IT and internet law lecturer Daithi Mac Sithigh, who led the study, said that while sharing via a network has its advantages, people may be put off doing so due to concerns over the legality of the situation and said that the laws need to be clarified.

"If the legal environment was more favourable to sharing it would play an important part in achieving the Digital Britain aim of inclusion and social goals of increased access," he added.

BT recently announced plans to launch Wi-Fi access in a range of holiday parks throughout the UK.

The service is inclusive for BT broadband customers with inclusive BT FON Wi-Fi minutes, BT Openzone subscribers, and O2 iPhone and mobile broadband users with inclusive Wi-Fi minutes in their contracts.
