Worldwide fibre optic broadband usage 'rising quickly'Monday, February 8th 2010 The number of people using fibre optic broadband services across the world is rising quickly, according to new figures. New research has revealed that the number of people signing up to fibre optic broadband services across the world is rising dramatically.
The study, by ABI Research, found that the take-up of such high-speed services is expected to rise by 20 per cent for the period between 2008 and 2014.
At present, 11 per cent of web users worldwide have access to fibre services, while 65 per cent currently subscribe to DSL technology.
Khin Sandy Lynn, research associate of ABI Research, said: "Filesharing, music downloads, IPTV, online gaming and video conferencing are all acting to increase the user demand for high speed internet.
"The number of fibre broadband subscribers is increasing with growing popularity of these services."
Rory Cellan-Jones, BBC News's technology correspondent, recently claimed in a blog for the news provider that the provision of fibre optic broadband services is becoming a major issue for political parties as they prepare for the upcoming general election.
