YouView set to launch mobile app and streaming service

Broadband-connected TV joint venture YouView is planning to roll out online linear TV channel delivery and a mobile app in the second phase of its launch.
The service will unveil an app that allows users to control the electronic programme guide via their smartphone and record remotely in the coming weeks, reports Broadcast.
This will be followed in early 2013 by the introduction of live content streaming, expanding beyond its current video-on-demand-only proposition.
Companies will be able to launch channels on YouView for a fraction of the price charged by the likes of Sky once this feature has been introduced.
More than 140 content providers have already expressed an interest in rolling out services on YouView across the linear and on-demand platforms.
Since its debut two months ago, a range of content from providers such as STV, Milkshake! and Sky's Now TV has been made available to YouView households.
Greg McCall, YouView's launch director, said: "Live streaming is important because it will enable UK-wide reach - which Freeview cannot offer - and is a cheap method of delivery, so will help engage more content providers."
