The dawn of mobile broadband has opened the doors of the Internet wider than ever before, with individuals from around the country able to connect to its mysteries from the train, the camp site or even the beach.

BT was later than many companies to jump on the mobile broadband bandwagon but now they're here to stay with their pre-pay edition to the marketplace. Where many other organisations will offer a monthly subscription to their package, BT has gone for an upfront payment option, including 1GB of usage a month thrown in with the supplied dongle.

1GB is more than enough for the majority of users, providing the bandwidth for up to 144 songs, 48 photos, 300 emails or 400 plus minutes of browsing time. You could even fit one film into the mix.

Unfortunately there isn't an option to roll your remaining data allowance over into the next month. Data bundles will only last until the specified allowance is reached or the month has come to an end, whichever happens soonest.

If you find that your mobile broadband is being well used and your 1GB limit is quickly diminishing then BT does offer a top up service. There's two different ways to go about topping up your pre-pay account; either by setting up what BT have dubbed your eWallet, or through the purchase of eVouchers on the high street.

These top-ups aren't cheap but will last for thirty days from the day of purchase, rather than expiring at the end of the month with your usual allowance.

BT's mobile broadband has the advantage of being very easy to install and run, while also including the facility to effectively and easily manage your package from the internet. You'll need to become familiar with this online management sooner rather than later after purchasing your package however, as you will need to activate your dongle through an online registration.

A top speed of 7.2Mbps is available though you'll only find yourself receiving speeds that high in particularly built up areas such as the centre of large cities, or at major airports. This is common with all mobile broadband providers, but due to the ever-increasing coverage of the 3G network in the UK, now at 80%, you should find that you're receiving enough speed to suit your requirements.

An attractive and small wireless dongle, reasonable pricing (albeit in one big lump sum) and easy management of your pre-pay package help to make BT's mobile broadband a sensible choice for anyone wanting to access the internet on the move.
