HD TV Providers

Digital TV providers have been swift to offer packages to meet the demand for high definition broadcasting, with some making inroads into the world of HD TV quicker than others. Whatever it is you’re looking for from an HDTV provider you’ll be pleased to hear that there is a healthy amount of competition in the marketplace which is pushing innovation and producing some bargain high definition TV packages and bundles.

There can be a lot to consider when selecting an HDTV provider so let us take you through a few of the things that you should consider before deciding which is the right one for you.

How to find the best HDTV provider

Currently the UK has three main HD TV providers: Virgin Media, Sky & BT. Each of these providers has different HD offerings and different levels of availability across the country so let's take a moment to look at each in turn.

Sky has more HD TV channels than any other digital TV provider with some packages featuring as many as 66 HD TV channels plus on-demand TV shows and movies in High Definition. Sky is very widely available across the UK.

Virgin Media subscribers to the Size M+ or L TV packages can access 8 HD channels while Size XL customers get access to 30 HD TV channels. Virgin also offers HD content via an on-demand service. Availability of these packages is limited to those areas connected to the Virgin Media cable network.

So far BT Vision has restricted its HD TV offering to on-demand content. The BT Vision on-demand service is widely available in areas with a minimum broadband connection of 2Mb.

So, consider what level of HD TV access you want before you start to compare providers and packages. Is HD something that you’ll just dip in and out of, perhaps with just the occasionally movie? Or will it be something that you’ll want exhaustive access to each and every day?

How to check HD TV availability

As discussed above, the availability of HD TV packages can vary across the country so the best place to start your search for the best HDTV provider to meet your needs is with our HDTV postcode checker.

You can go about this in a couple of ways. First off, if you already have your eye on one particular High Definition TV provider you can click on their name in the section above to be taken to that provider’s page on our site. You can then enter your postcode and fine-tune your results by placing a tick in the “HD” field of the filter. We’ll then show you a list of all of the different HD TV packages and bundles from that provider that are available to you, along with a complete breakdown of prices and terms.

What we recommend, however, is to do a more generalised search of all of the different HD TV providers. By searching in this way you may find a better, cheaper provider than the one you had in mind to begin with and you may well come across a special offer that you could easily have missed.

Once you’ve entered your postcode and clicked “Check” you’ll be shown a list of HDTV packages and bundles from all of the providers that operate in your area. You can then fine-tune your results by means of the filter by clicking on “sports” or “movies” or selecting the minimum broadband speed – in fact, whatever you like.

How to compare HDTV bundles

As you will see when you use our postcode checker we have a selection of HD TV only packages and also packages that are included as part of a bundle. If you hadn’t considered opting for a bundle then you may want to do so. Bundles give you so much more than the basic service and very often bring some pretty significant cost savings too.

With a bundle you’ll still get the HDTV package you want plus a broadband service, inclusive phone calls or both. Bundles really come into their own if you wanted or needed broadband and calls services anyway as you’ll usually get each service within the bundle a little cheaper than you would if you were taking them individually from different suppliers, and you’ll only have one bill to pay at the end of the month.

With Virgin Media you can bundle your digital TV with unlimited superfast fibre optic broadband with a range of download speeds to choose from while with Sky you can enjoy more HDTV channels than with any other provider and bundle your digital TV service with reduced line rental.

There really is an amazing range of options when you’re comparing an HD TV provider's bundles, so take some time to compare them carefully. If you can get exactly the digital TV package you want plus more great entertainment or communications services all bundled together into one money-saving deal you’ll be really glad that you took the time to compare.
