What are LLU broadband providers?

LLU is short for Local Loop Unbundling, a process that lets companies other than BT install equipment in local telephone exchanges. This makes it possible for them to use the pre-existing copper wires that connect homes to the exchange for the provision of broadband services.

If your local exchange has been unbundled you can often enjoy a faster broadband service over your traditional phone line from at least one extra provider – and often from a number of different providers. These other companies are known as LLU broadband providers.

Any increase in the number of providers operating in an area increases competition, which, in turn, very often leads to a reduction in prices. This makes comparing LLU providers a very good idea indeed.

How to compare LLU broadband providers

If your exchange has been unbundled you’ll often find that you can get a faster broadband package with speeds up to, or in some cases even in excess of, 20Mb.

As different areas are unbundled at different times, and different companies take advantage of the unbundling, you may also find that a particular provider may be the fastest in one area, but not quite as fast in others. Therefore, the first thing you should do to find the fastest LLU provider in your area is to use our postcode checker.

You can do this in one of two ways. If you have a preferred provider you can use the postcode checker on that provider’s page. To do this, simply click on the name of your preferred provider above.

What may prove to be more useful to you is to compare all LLU broadband providers and their respective packages on a single page. You can quickly and easily do this by using our postcode checker on our LLU broadband comparison page. We will then show you a complete list of every LLU provider and package that is available in your area.

When you're comparing the broadband packages in your area you should keep a few things in mind. The most important aspect of a broadband package for most people is the download speed, but another factor may prove more important to you.

Most broadband packages have a monthly download allowance, or usage allowance. This is the maximum amount of data that can be sent across your broadband connection without contravening the terms of your agreement with the provider. If you're a light broadband user than you can probably save yourself some money by opting for a cheaper package with a lower download allowance.

However, if you're likely to be using your broadband connection a lot, especially for regularly downloading very large files such as HD movies then you really should consider signing up with a provider that gives its users a very high or even a truly unlimited monthly download allowance. Opting for a higher or unlimited download allowance in advance should help you to avoid being penalised by your ISP for excessive usage down the line.

LLU broadband bundles

Many LLU providers offer their broadband packages in bundles with digital TV or inclusive home phone calls, or in triple bundles with both. When you're comparing LLU providers it may work in your favour to consider an LLU broadband bundle rather than a standalone broadband package.

With a broadband bundle you may be able to enjoy digital TV with over 100 TV channels and a range of inclusive call options that would let you make free calls to other landline numbers at the weekend, during all off-peak hours or at anytime.

Your charges for all of these services will appear on a single bill each month and it is very often the case that subscribing to two or more bundled services from a single provider will work out a lot cheaper than taking each from a separate provider.
