So far as so-called starter packages are concerned, the Sky+ Starter is among the very best available of its kind. Indeed, although a one off charge is applied in respect to the supplied equipment (including the Sky+ box), the Sky+ Starter package offers a superb service comprising entertainment and telecommunications at an extremely affordable monthly rate.

As mentioned above, the Sky digital television option includes the choice of two Sky TV Packs in addition to more than 240 free-to-air digital TV channels. Following the UK's switchover to digital only broadcasting, it is necessary for households to select a digital provider or equipment if they intend to continue watching free television channels, so in this respect alone Sky TV is an excellent option.

The main selling point of the Sky TV component of the Sky+ Starter package is that, in addition to providing more than 300 digital channels in total including the two Sky TV Packs, the Sky+ box offers an entirely new approach to how television is watched.

Sky+ customers are able to record, pause and rewind live television at the touch of the button, which includes live sports events and all those popular television shows that might otherwise be missed when, for example, the baby starts crying or the phone rings.

Customers selecting the Sky+ Starter package should note, however, that this option does not include a high-definition (HD) subscription. The choice of two (from six available) Sky TV Packs is the default option and more can be added for a small additional monthly fee.

In respect to the Sky+ Starter package's broadband element, customers will receive a free wireless router worth £50 that features high security and reliability. The broadband connection itself offers a basic yet value for money service comprising 2Mb download speeds and 400Kb speeds.

To put these speeds into context comparatively speaking, a typical phone line will have a maximum capable line speed of 8Mb but will rarely achieve this much.

The average download speed in the UK is somewhere between 2Mb and 4Mb, so choosing the basic Sky broadband package still represents excellent value. The 2GB download limit must be carefully observed by customers.

Finally, the Sky+ Starter package's telephone component features free evening and weekend calls to all UK landlines. International rates are some 5% lower than on BT's similar package. Daytime UK calls on the Sky+ Starter package are priced at a standard low rates, whilst calls to mobile phones are also relatively competitive.
