Broadband deal of the week: Vodafone offering cheapest fibre broadband in the UK (sort of)

Friday, August 11th 2017 by Dan Howdle
Come one, come all to yet another broadband deal of the week. I'm Dan Howdle, your friendly consumer telecoms expert guy here to hand-pick this week's best once again. So without further do…

This week's best deal is from Vodafone. This offer went live yesterday and is available up to 9 September. At its core is 38Mb or 76Mb fibre broadband for £25 and £30 per month respectively.

Vodafone reckons this deal is the cheapest fibre in the UK right now. So is it? My answer would have to be 'kinda'. Because you have to do some situational mathematics to get there. Here, have a look at how it compares with its two closest competitors right now and tell me what you think…

  • Vodafone Unlimited Fibre 38

    • Pay nothing today
    • Free Vodafone Connect router

  • Plusnet Unlimited Fibre

    • Free wireless router
    Offer ends 30th January
    £23 .99

As you can see, Plusnet currently has a deal on offering the same 38Mb fibre Vodafone is, and it's a penny less per month. Origin Broadband is close, but clearly 99p more per month than Vodafone. So how is Vodafone claiming to be cheaper than Plusnet? Well, it's all in the extras.

Whichever Vodafone deal you pick, you see – 38Mb or 76Mb – you'll get a choice of free gift or cashback. Vodafone is offering a Sonos speaker (worth £199), a fitbit Charge 2, Sennheiser headphones, a Tom Tom camera or £75 cash back in the form of a pre-paid Mastercard. As a side-note, do be aware that you will choose your gift AFTER your broadband is activated, not before.

The Plusnet deal on the other hand has no such incentive. So while not technically cheaper on a per-month-cost basis, the Vodafone deals are cheaper if you deduct the cash back or the value of the speaker or whichever whatnot you choose to go with it.

It's cheeky, but free gifts do matter to people, so we're willing to go with Vodafone on this one. And if you want the very best value, you should go with the Sonos speaker as it's worth the most of all the offers.

The only other caveat I'll add is to say that this Vodafone deal is on an 18-month contract, so bear in mind you're going to be tied in for that long.

If you're currently mid-way through your current contract, I should add that Vodafone is offering to pay up to £100 to the provider you're switching from in order to offset any early exit fees you might suffer. That means you can consider this deal, along with its accompanying goodies, whether you're mid-way through your old contract or not.
