Broadband deal of the week: £5 off all standalone Sky broadband packages, plus £100 cashback

Friday, August 18th 2017 by Dan Howdle
Things are really hotting up this month. We’ve already seen some stunning free gift/money-off combos from the likes of Vodafone, First Utility and BT over the last couple of weeks. Now it’s purveyor of Game Of Thrones Sky’s turn to tempt you and I have to say, this is pretty good.

The way Sky’s putting it is that you’re saving £230 over 12 months when you switch from BT. As per usual, we’re doing wobbly maths to get there. Not to say this isn’t a good deal, just that to save £230 you need to be in a specific set of circumstances with your current deal (from BT).

Sky explains it thus: “£230 saving based on current standard monthly subscription price for existing BT Broadband Unlimited customers (paying £40.99pm including line rental and UK Weekend Calls) switching outside their minimum term to Sky Broadband Unlimited, Sky Talk Pay As You Talk (no inclusive calls, £0pm) and Sky Line Rental.”

What this means is that to save the £230, you have to be with BT, on their 17Mb Unlimited broadband, and you have to be beyond the offer period (the first year when you pay less). I will add also there’s a reason Sky has picked BT for the comparison here: At £1.64 per megabit, per month, BT’s non-fibre broadband offers the poorest pound-to-megabit value in the country right now.

So, if you’re going to compare with something that’s going to show your own deal in a positive light, that’s going to be it. It’s a bit sneaky of Sky, to be honest. That said, Sky offers some of the most reliable, and speediest (if you don’t count Virgin Media) broadband this country has to offer, and £5 per month off its normal monthly premium, plus £100 cashback is still a pretty good deal. I just think Sky shoots itself in the foot a bit by attempting to lure in punters with big – and mostly meaningless – 'pounds-saved' numbers. Here are those deals for your perusal…

  • Sky Unlimited Broadband

    • Free Sky Q Hub router

The best value deal of the three is clearly the 17Mb ADSL deal. It offers the £100 voucher and only has a £19.95 set-up cost. The two fibre deals here – 38Mb and 76Mb – offer more speed, but also come with a whopping £59.95 set-up cost, which obviously takes a big chunk out of whatever you’re hoping to gain from that voucher.

Nevertheless, if you forgive Sky the high set-up fee, the broadband itself is some of the cheapest fibre in the country right now. Do bear in mind, however, that these deals require you commit for 18 months. If this deal isn’t tickling your fancy, as usual you can see everything available where you live by putting your postcode in the box below. Have a great weekend folks and I’ll see you next week.
