Broadband deal of the week: First Utility Ultra First 76Mb, free installation, PAYG calls, £29.99 p/m

Friday, September 15th 2017 by Dan Howdle
This week I’ve decided, rather unusually, to go for something from the faster end of the scale. Primarily, this is just because the deals I’ve been most often recommending recently have been of the basic or entry-level variety for the most part, so this is something a bit different. But also because for a deal at the top speed of those using the Openreach network (all of them besides Virgin Media), this one is terrifically cheap.

This deal ends on 2 October, so first thing to bear in mind here is that it won’t be around forever. You’ve got a couple of weeks to consider, but it won’t wait around for you forever.

That out of the way, let’s get into the details. First off, the speed. While 76Mbps may sound slow compared to the 300Mbps top speed currently offered by Virgin Media, really it isn’t – it’s just that Virgin’s speeds are somewhat unnecessary and ridiculous.

Ofcom currently rates 10Mbps as the minimum speed “the minimum required to cope with the needs of a typical family or small business”. I reckon most households need a bit more than that, but usually not much more. Entry-level fibre, at 38Mbps, is plenty for most households, even if there are a number of people using the internet at the same time.

Thing is, this 76Mbps First Utility deal is being offered cheaper than a goodly number of the 38 or 52Mbps deals offered on the same network by other providers. So the question becomes not whether or not, most of the time, you’re going to be pushing the limits of a slower connection, but if the faster speed in the same price of cheaper, then why not? Here are a few 38 and 52Mbps deals on now to illustrate my point.

There are exceptions, of course. Right now, up until 9 October, Vodafone is offering its 38Mbps entry-level fibre service for a terrifyingly cheap £20 per month.

So, if you’re absolutely sure you won’t need the extra speed, this Vodafone deal should absolutely be your first choice. If you ever find yourself impatiently waiting for something to download, however, be that a videogame, movie or obscenely large file of some kind, you should take advantage of the extra speed while it’s cheap.
