Broadband deal of the week: Plusnet Unlimited Broadband, 17Mb, weekend calls, £50 cashback, £18.99 p/m

Thursday, October 12th 2017 by Dan Howdle
Deal of the week is a little early this week thanks to this excellent offering from Plusnet, which starts today and runs till 17 October. It’s rather unusual this one, offering both a rock-bottom price, and cashback – something we all but never see.

From a price point of view you really can’t go wrong here. Though the monthly tariff isn’t quite the cheapest out there right now, it’s bloody close – only 49p more, in fact. I’ve added some of the cheapest deals from other providers at the bottom of this page so you can compare them for yourself.

However, before you take a gander, I can tell you what you certainly won’t find anywhere else: You won’t find a broadband deal with a monthly price most other providers charge just for line rental, that also offers you a £50 cashback incentive and free weekend calls. No sir/madam you most certainly will not. Here’s the deal:

  • Plusnet Unlimited Broadband

    Plusnet
    • Pay 1st month's bill today
    • Free wireless router
    £19 .99
£10 set-up cost includes line rental See Deal

It’s worth bearing in mind that this deal is non-fibre (ADSL), which puts it at the slower end of what’s out there. However, there are a lot of misconceptions about exactly what speed you actually need. Fine, if there are five or more of you and you all love watching different things on Netflix at the same time, fibre is your only choice, but most households will do fine with 17Mbps and never find reason to complain.

It’s perfectly adequate for streaming movies and TV in high definition, and since that’s about the most demanding thing most people use their internet for, everything else is a given.

But what’s really special about this deal is not the speed, not even the price, but more that at this price you’re also getting £50 cashback and free weekend calls. As I said earlier, it’s practically unheard of.

Do bear in mind, though, that you’ll only be able to claim your £50 cashback once your broadband is installed and up and running. All broadband providers offering free gifts have this policy as it prevents people abusing the system by getting their freebies, then cancelling during the cooling-off, or ‘contemplation’ period - usually 14 days.

But it’s also very rare to get any free calling packages in deals at this price point. Whether or not free weekend calls via your landline is something you’re going to make use of or not is going to be a factor here. However, remember that if you opt for a different deal that doesn’t include free weekend calls, you’re going to pay about the same anyway.

As promised earlier, here are some of the best deals on right now from other providers, some offering faster speeds and other combinations of goodies.
