Broadband deal of the week: BT Infinity fibre, 52Mb, £50-off set-up, £150 cashback, £29.99 p/m

Friday, February 16th 2018 by Dan Howdle
BT broadband almost always has some sort of sale on, but it’s pretty rare for it to offer both cashback and money off BT Infinity’s usually-expensive set-up fees. This is a double-whammy which makes this deal – if you deduct the cashback from the first-year cost – the cheapest fibre currently going.

So what about those maths? Well, the cheapest fibre deal in the market right now, if you look solely at monthly cost, is Vodafone’s 38Mb Fibre. At only £20 per month, free setup, an excellent router and great customer service, it’s certainly tempting.

However, BT’s deal is cheaper, if you factor in that cashback. The maths for Vodafone are really simple: £20 (per month) times 12 (months) means £240 for the first year. This BT deal on the other hand goes something like this: £29.99 (per month), times 12 (months), is £359.58, plus £9.99 setup is £369.97, minus the £150 cashback, makes a total first-year cost of £219.97, saving you £20.03 across the year.

And that’s not very much. Not enough, in fact, to sway most of us to pick BT, say, over Vodafone. However, as well as being slightly cheaper, BT has some other tricks up its sleeve. For example, BT offers subscription TV, which you can bolt onto your broadband deal, where Vodafone does not. The BT Infinity deal is also around 27% faster than Vodafone. In a busy household, that matters.

There’s also brand new deal from TalkTalk that prices itself midway between the two and offers £70 cashback. I’m putting it in here as a sort of halfway house for those having trouble deciding between low premiums and cashback rewards. TalkTalk offers a bit of both, though we wouldn’t strictly-speaking call TalkTalk’s offer cashback in the truest sense. You get vouchers you can spend at Pizza Express, Debenhams, Tesco or Amazon.

That does mean there’s practically nothing you can’t buy with it, but the limitation is worth mentioning nonetheless.

Important note about cashback rewards

If you go for any of the deals seen here featuring cashback, bear in mind you will need to claim the reward yourself after your new broadband connection is up and running. It’ll take a couple of weeks to get your new service installed from the time you sign up, then a couple of weeks after that (usually) to receive your cashback reward.

You can find all the information you need about claiming cashback rewards on this dedicated page. The long and short of it, however, is don’t expect to get your cashback immediately, and expect there to be a small amount of effort on your part to get a hold of it.
