Who is Vodafone’s Broadband Superfast 2 for?

Vodafone Superfast 2 is one of Vodafone’s entry-level broadband packages as well as one of its most widely available broadband services throughout the country. It offers adequate speed for everything from browsing the internet to streaming your favourite TV shows, from online shopping to videoconferencing.

Here’s a quick overview of who Vodafone Broadband Superfast 2 is for:

  • Households with up to three occupants – This package will be adequate for small families with less than a dozen Internet-connected devices
  • Gamers – Vodafone Superfast 2 will enable you to play the most popular online games; however, you will be waiting between two and six hours to download some of the larger single-player games bundled with their ever-expanding suite of DLCs
  • One or two streaming devices – Streaming HDR Ultra-HD (4K) content can exceed bandwidth usage of 50Mbps, especially if you decide to pick the Apple TV digital media player and the Apple TV+ subscription Vodafone is offering; Superfast 2 will be just fine as long as you don’t try to go above two 4K streams simultaneously
  • Cloud storage – Whether you keep your precious family photos on iCloud or Dropbox, or your essential documents on OneDrive, Superfast 2 will ensure that your files are quickly accessible when you need them
  • Those who struggle with wifi coverage – Vodafone has one of the best support available for those who struggle to envelop their house with wireless coverage (however, this does come at an extra monthly charge)

How does Vodafone Superfast 2 compare?

Vodafone offers a wide variety of broadband technologies: the older and slower FTTC (high-speed fibre cable up to a cabinet on your street which then connects to your home through a slower copper cable), the modern ultra-fast FTTP (fast fibre cable up to your property), home mobile broadband (which leverages Vodafone’s 4G and 5G mobile coverage to replace cables) and the on-the-go mobile broadband (which also relies on 4G/5G mobile data, but uses portable routers that work on batteries).

What differentiates these technologies is a combination of speed and availability. While virtually everyone can get FTTC or 4G, the newer and much faster FTTP and 5G technologies are available only to a fraction of the public. Furthermore, the mobile broadband packages come with restrictive data caps and tend to cost much more than fibre ones. As a result, FTTC remains the obvious choice for many.

The very competitively priced Vodafone Broadband Superfast 2 is the fastest FTTC package Vodafone offers. Let’s check how this package compares to the other Vodafone fibre packages:

Broadband Package Download Speed Upload Speed
Superfast 1 Fibre 38Mbps 10Mbps
Superfast 2 Fibre 67Mbps 20Mbps
Superfast 100 100Mbps 100Mbps
Ultrafast 200 Broadband 200Mbps 200Mbps
Ultrafast 500 Broadband 500Mbps 500Mbps
Gigafast 900 Broadband 910Mbps 910Mbps

What is included with Vodafone Broadband Superfast 2?

Like all other fibre packages, Superfast 2 comes with no data caps or restrictions. More than that, Vodafone pairs its customers with its premium router, the Vodafone WiFi Hub. This modern router leverages its seven wifi antennae to provide ample wireless coverage even in medium-sized houses.

The Secure Net functionality is a set of anti-malware and anti-phishing (scam) website filters and customisable parental control tools that come free as part of the router’s functionality. Note that these tools only work when connected to the Hub. If you are using Vodafone’s mobile services, Vodafone has a different set of filtering tools. For public wifi parental control, you will want to look into Vodafone’s Norton offer presented in the next section.

The Hub also comes with the free Vodafone Broadband App for Android/iOS, which can be used to easily manage the router and its wifi settings, as well as configure the parental control tools.

Vodafone WiFi Hub Router Specifications

  • Current gen WiFi – The Hub uses the modern WiFi 5 standard, but does not support the newest WiFi 6 set of technologies
  • Mobile Broadband Backup – 4G mobile signal can be used as a backup for those rare moments when the fibre broadband goes down
  • Dual-band – Those that need the fastest wireless speed can connect to the router’s 5GHz band, while those that prefer range and stability can pick the 2.4GHz range
  • Smart channel selection – Like all modern routers, the Hub will pick the least congested channel when broadcasting the wifi signal; this improves the reliability of wireless communication and decreases latency
  • Seven antennae – More antennae translates to a better wifi range and stronger signal; with no less than seven antennae, the Vodafone WiFi Hub will not disappoint
  • Reduced latency when Gaming – The router allows simultaneous data streams, which means lower latency when gaming
  • Super WiFi (Mesh) – If you get the Pro or Pro Xtra packages, you can mesh the Hub with up to three next-gen WiFi 6 boosters, therefore greatly improving wireless coverage and signal strength
  • Gigabit Ethernet ports – The four ethernet ports can service four directly connected devices
  • Managed via app – To manage the router in a user-friendly manner, the Vodafone Broadband App can be installed on your iOS or Android smartphone or tablet

Extras

If you are worried about wifi coverage or simply want extreme broadband reliability, take a look at the slightly higher priced Pro Superfast 2 package. It comes with Vodafone’s WiFi Guarantee, which means that Vodafone will pair you with the Super WiFi Plus, an Alexa-enabled wifi booster that extends your wireless coverage. If that still doesn’t fix your wifi problem, Vodafone will throw into the deal up to two further boosters.

The Pro package also comes with a 4G USB dongle that Vodafone calls Broadband Backup. This dongle connects to the Hub and enables you to use Vodafone’s 4G mobile broadband network through your Vodafone WiFi Hub if the fibre broadband ever goes down. The dongle does come with an initial 50GB data cap, but this can be extended for free as required.

Vodafone also partnered with Norton to give all Pro customers Norton 360 Premium anti-virus protection and parental controls for up to ten devices for free in the first 12 months, and then at half price for the next year.

With Pro, you also get support from Vodafone’s dedicated IT helpline, WiFi Xperts. Give them a ring and Vodafone’s technicians will help you troubleshoot and fix your wifi issues, provide extra wireless repeaters and help you manage your Broadband Backup service.

For a further extra fee, you can get the top-in-class Pro Superfast 2 Xtra package. This retains all the benefits of the Pro, but comes with unlimited anytime UK landline and mobile calls, a three months trial of the Apple TV+ streaming service and an Apple TV 4K media player. You will also be protected from price increases and get no rise in the cost of the package mid-contract (the other packages increase their price each April in line with CPI).

What we think

The Vodafone Superfast 2 is a competitively priced entry-level broadband package that will be great for everything from online shopping to gaming and streaming in 4K. Vodafone bundles a premium router, and the Plus package will offer improved wireless coverage and broadband reliability. Finally, the Xtra’s Apple TV will breathe new life into your TV, whether old or new. We highly recommend this package for medium households as well as those that have already bought into the Apple ecosystem.
