              Frequently asked questions

If you’re after fast broadband, Plusnet fibre could be your cup of (Yorkshire) tea. You can find all the current Plusnet deals by directing your gaze above this FAQ, but if it’s questions you want answering, you’re in the right place.

What’s the upload speed of Plusnet fibre?

That depends on which Plusnet fibre broadband deal you choose. The packages with the faster download speeds have the fastest upload speeds.

              • Plusnet unlimited fibre: 1.9Mb upload speed
              • Plusnet unlimited fibre extra: 19Mb upload speed

What’s the cheapest Plusnet fibre package?

The cheapest package shifts and changes on a regular basis as different deals and promotions come into play. As a consequence, we can’t tell you what package is the cheapest here, but there’s an easy way to find out – simply arrange the above deals by order of monthly cost, and the cheapest will be right at the top.

When looking for the cheapest deal pay attention to the lifetime cost, not just the monthly cost. Sometimes Plusnet packages may be free for a couple of months before rocketing in price.

What Plusnet fibre router do I get?

You get the Plusnet Hub One broadband router when you sign up to any Plusnet fibre package. This replaces the Hub Zero router offered previously.

The Plusnet Hub One router comes with four ports on the back for wired connections and two wireless channels. It’s a dual band router (operating on 2.4GHz and 5GHz band). It offers faster speeds and comes with smart wireless which means less interference. Plus, you won’t need to wait for an engineer to set up your connection, you can simply install the router yourself.

Can I use my own router with Plusnet fibre?

If you’re computer-savvy and know exactly what you’re doing, go right ahead. But if you’re planning to just plug in a router from another provider in the hope that it will work flawlessly, it may be better to take the Plusnet router. It will save a lot of frustration if you’re not so sharp on the difference between PPPoA and PPPoE.

              Can I self-install fibre broadband?

You can’t self-install Plusnet fibre – at least not yet. You may be able to arrange self-installation of Plusnet fibre from early 2016 onwards, when Openreach launches the ability to self install FTTC services. Until then, you’ll have to deal with an engineer visit.

How long does Plusnet fibre installation take?

It will take somewhere in the region of 14 days from the date you order Plusnet fibre for installation to take place. The actual time depends on demand and the availability of engineers.

The installation process itself takes around three to four hours. An engineer will need to visit for the installation, so ensure that there’s somebody in (an adult) to let the engineer into the property and make him or her a cup of tea.

              Does Plusnet have traffic management?

It does. In fact Plusnet is one of very few providers to still actively manage internet traffic. Other providers that do this include EE and Virgin Media – and in the latter’s case, only on uploads.

Plusnet’s traffic shaping policy gives each type of online activity a certain priority. Activities that are deemed ‘low priority’ will perform more slowly than those rated as ‘high priority’, especially during peak times such as evenings and weekends.

              Plusnet fibre isn’t truly unlimited

Because it implements traffic management, Plusnet fibre isn’t truly unlimited. A truly unlimited broadband service is one without any kind of artificial controls over how much you can download or upload in a given month.

Plusnet fibre may be good for gaming

Plusnet rates both online gaming and VoIP (voice over internet protocol) services as high priority. As these two services often go hand-in-hand, Plusnet fibre broadband could be a good choice if the main reason you’re after an online connection is to play online games.

Can I get a static IP with Plusnet fibre?

You can, but you’ll have to pay a one-off charge to get it. This costs £5.

A static IP address, unlike a dynamic IP address, stays the same. This can be useful if you’re planning to set up a server for work or for fun, where you and others need to access it from a remote location on a regular basis.

Can I take a line rental saver with Plusnet fibre?

You can add the line rental saver option when you purchase Plusnet fibre broadband. The option will appear under the ‘phone’ tab. Simply select it from the available options.

Plusnet line rental saver costs £185.88, which you have to pay upfront. Choosing this over a standard monthly line rental payment will save you around £30 over the course of a year.

Do I need a landline for Plusnet fibre broadband-only?

All Plusnet fibre broadband-only packages require a landline connection to operate. This means you will need to sign up for landline services through another provider, and likely means you’ll be paying line rental to that other provider.

Because of this, choosing Plusnet fibre broadband-only is unlikely to be the cheapest option and will probably cost considerably more than choosing its ‘broadband and phone’ counterpart.

Can I cancel Plusnet broadband early?

Because Plusnet fibre broadband is bound to a contract, cancellation is often subject to an early termination fee.

This fee is usually calculated on the months remaining on your contract. For example, if you cancel during the second month of your contract you’ll pay considerably more than if you cancelled during the final month.

You can cancel for free within the first 14 days

If you act quickly you can cancel without penalty any time within the first 14 days of ordering your Plusnet fibre broadband package. You don’t even need to give a reason: just give Plusnet a call and state your intention to cancel early, and you’ll be released without charge.
