How to compare Sky TV and broadband deals

Sky’s collection of TV bundles are the starting point for building the perfect package and once you’ve picked the best match for your taste in telly, you can then add broadband and phone. The comparison table above shows all the different options and lets you rank them by number of channels, broadband speed and price.

Check what broadband options are available in your area

Since Sky TV is delivered via satellite it is available throughout the country, but broadband works differently. Standard Sky unlimited broadband is available to the majority of UK households but not everyone, and those outside the network will only be able to get Sky Connect, which is more restrictive and expensive. Like all providers, Sky’s fibre optic broadband network is still expanding, so it's only available in certain locations. You can easily find out what Sky services you can get in your area using the postcode checker at the top of the page.

              Familiarise yourself with the details

Arm yourself with all the details about the packages you like before you make your decision so you’re certain it’s the right fit for your needs and your budget. Key features to look out for in the small print include contract length, notice period and cancellation terms, plus set-up charges and equipment fees.

Why choose a Sky TV and broadband package?

Widest choice of TV channels in the UK, including Sky Atlantic

Sky is the original subscription TV provider and continues to trump all others with the sheer quantity of channels. You’re sure to find something of interest whatever your taste and one of the main jewels in Sky’s crown, Sky Atlantic, attracts viewers of popular series like Game of Thrones, Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire. Sports fans can gorge on their sport of choice with Sky Sports and movie lovers have a huge choice of films across several different genres with Sky Cinema. It's also worth remembering that customers also get the popular Sky News channels.

ADSL and fibre optic broadband with truly unlimited usage

Whether you’re content with browsing, emailing, shopping and catching up with social media, or are a heavy-use household that watches lots of TV on demand and juggles multiple online devices, you’ll find a Sky broadband deal that fits.

Inclusive free perks like parental controls, public Wi-Fi and Sky Go

Sky is one of the biggest providers of broadband, TV and phone deals and offers its customers a nice range of features at no extra charge. These include parental control software with Broadband Shield, unlimited free public Wi-Fi at 20,000+ Cloud hotspots and the Sky Go app, which allows you watch the content from your TV package on computers and mobile devices via Wi-Fi.

              Pros & cons

              Pros

              • Widest choice of TV channels in the UK
              • Truly unlimited broadband
              • Valuable extras, including public Wi-Fi

              Cons

              • Not the fastest broadband around
              • Heavyweight packages are expensive
              • Satellite dish installation required

Which package is right for me?

Pick your Sky TV package first, then broadband and phone

A TV bundle is the foundation of your Sky TV deal and there are six to choose from. Once you’ve picked one, we’ll look at your broadband and phone options to complete the three-in-one package.

Consider what you like to watch

Sky TV offers a wealth of viewing choice; you get 240 free-to-air channels with every bundle plus access to catch-up TV with BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5. Each bundle contains one of Sky’s three entertainment packs, which feature varying numbers of channels across different genres and extras such as HD and 3D channels and box sets on demand.

Get your sports or movies fix

Sky Cinema and Sky Sports can be added to any package or you could opt for the ready-made bundles that include them. With the exception of the Complete Bundle, the channels won’t be in HD unless you take the HD add-on that costs £5.25 per package per month.

              You’ll get a free Sky Q box

Sky throws in a set-top box with all TV subscriptions, which allows you to pause, rewind and record up to 500 hours of standard definition programming. If this doesn’t sound like enough, you can take the bigger Sky Q 2TB for £199, which doubles the storage capacity. Both boxes have some useful features such as parental controls, remote record and the option to record multiple channels at once.

And free access to the Sky Go app

You can watch your TV content while out and about or at home in a different room with the Sky Go app. It’s compatible with most computers, laptops, tablets and mobile and enables you to stream your favourite shows wherever you have a wi-fi connection. If you’d like more flexibility, Sky Go Extra allows you to download content to watch later without broadband – but it’ll cost you an extra £5 per month, contract-free.

              Unless you take Sky Multiroom

Since Sky Go isn’t compatible with TVs, you’ll need to take Sky Q Multiscreen if you want to access your subscription on a TV in a different room. It’ll cost you an extra £12 per month for one Sky Q mini box but £99 for any subsequent boxes. The Sky Go Extra app is thrown in too.

              Add broadband to your package

You’ll get 12GB of broadband for free

Sky’s entry-level internet plan – Sky Broadband 12GB – is included free as standard with all Sky TV packages. It is very light on usage however and most TV viewers will eat through the 12GB cap after a few hours of catch-up TV before you’ve sent a single email.

But the unlimited packages are far more useful

Sky’s other three broadband plans have truly unlimited usage with no download caps or traffic management, which makes them much more suitable for the majority of users. The defining feature of the services is speed: one is a standard broadband service and the other two are fibre.

              The speed options include:

              • Sky Broadband Unlimited – up to 17Mb
              • Sky Fibre 25GB – up to 38Mb
              • Sky Fibre Unlimited – up to 38Mb
              • Sky Fibre Max – up to 76Mb

Think about what you do online

Up to 17Mbps is ample for many users but as our internet appetites grow and we all do more and more online, there’s an increasing need for faster connections. Think about how often you use the internet, what you do and how many people share your home connection. The more your household does online, the more you’ll benefit from a faster speed. And remember, watching catch-up TV and other on demand content from Sky counts towards your broadband usage.

And carry out a speed test

It’s helpful to find out what speed you’re currently getting and you can easily do this using our broadband speed test. If you’re currently on a standard service (which delivers broadband through copper telephone lines) and it feels too slow, you’ll know its time to upgrade to fibre.

              Now pick your phone plan

Inclusive calls when you need them

The right choice will depend on how often you use your phone, whether you call abroad often and how much you want to spend. Whichever one you choose, you’ll get inclusive calls during the selected period, including 0845 and 0870 numbers.

There are four options to choose from:

              • Sky Pay as you Talk – Standard call rates apply
              • Sky Talk Evenings & Weekends Extra – £4 per month
              • Sky Talk Anytime Extra – £8 per month
              • Sky Talk Anytime International Extra - £12 per month

What do I need to join Sky?

An engineer will visit to install your satellite dish

After you’ve placed your order, you’ll receive an installation date by email and your router and TV viewing card will arrive in the post. On the day, the engineer will advise on the best spot for your dish, install it and give a demo on how to use your new Sky Q box and remote.

You’ll be able to set up the broadband router yourself

The Sky Hub router is supplied free of charge (subject to £6.95 P&P) and you’ll receive instructions to set it up yourself and get your devices connected via wi-fi or Ethernet. If you have an old computer that isn’t wireless, you can purchase a wireless adapter so you can avoid using an Ethernet cable and limiting computer use to the same room as the router.

              How do I switch?

It depends on who you’re switching from

Sky makes it nice and easy to join with a dedicated team of advisors dealing with customers switching from other providers. If you’re moving from Virgin Media (which uses a different network), Sky will need to arrange installation of a new Sky phone line or switch on an inactive line if you already have one. Once you’re set up, you’ll need to contract Virgin to cancel, normally giving 30 days’ notice. If you’re moving from any other provider, Sky will be able to use the same line and will speak to them to arrange the switchover on your behalf. Either way, you’ll usually be set up within two weeks of placing your online order.

              Cable.co.uk recommends

Make a note of the TV bundle which feels like the best fit for your family, then pick a broadband speed and call plan to suit your usage pattern and budget. Finally, use our postcode checker at the top of the page to make sure you can get the services you want in your area, then you’re ready to click and buy.
